Is Prague Easy to Navigate with Luggage?
Prague is compact and very walkable, but not always luggage-friendly. Cobblestones, stairs, narrow pavements and busy trams can make moving around with suitcases challenging. With the right routes and transport choices, it becomes much easier.
1. Using the metro with luggage
Prague’s metro system is fast and reliable, but not all stations are equally good for travelers with bags. Some stations have elevators, some only escalators, and a few have long staircases.
- Usually easier: Main Station (Hlavní nádraží), Muzeum, Můstek, Nádraží Veleslavín.
- Often tougher: Staroměstská, Malostranská (older layouts, more stairs / crowds).
- Tip: Follow accessibility symbols (“bezbariérový přístup”) and aim for elevators.
During peak hours (7:30–9:00 & 16:30–18:00), avoid large bags on Metro A through Old Town.
2. Trams: beautiful but not always luggage-friendly
Trams are iconic and scenic, but many have steps and limited space near the doors.
- Great for short city travel.
- Not ideal with large suitcases.
- Hold your bag — sudden braking is real.
3. Buses: best for airport connections
Bus 119 from the airport to Nádraží Veleslavín is a common budget route. The Airport Express goes directly to Main Station and is usually easier with bigger luggage.
- 119 → Metro A: budget + fast (but involves a change)
- Airport Express: simpler with luggage (especially if you’re near the station)
4. Walking with luggage
Sidewalks can be uneven. If you have:
- heavy bags
- a stroller + luggage
- rolling bags on cobblestones
A tram or metro ride is often better even for short distances.
5. Taxis & ride-hailing
- ✔ Fast & direct
- ✔ Best for families or groups
- ✘ Surge pricing possible
6. Tips for easier luggage travel
- Plan routes with minimal transfers.
- Use elevators where possible.
- Avoid Old Town with heavy bags.
- Add extra time in summer heat or winter snow.
7. What travelers often do on their last day
A typical pattern:
- Store luggage at hotel or storage shop.
- Visit only one district.
- Head to airport in late afternoon.
Some prefer to send luggage ahead to the airport to stay free — that depends on your timing and how much you want to move around.
