Using public transport with luggage in Prague

Metro, trams and buses in Prague are efficient – but not always fun with two suitcases and kids. This guide explains how to move around safely, what to expect on each line and when it’s smarter to use a luggage transfer instead.

Voyli.one picks up your luggage at hotels and Airbnbs and meets you later at Prague Airport – insured, sealed and live-tracked.

Public transport with luggage in Prague

Is Prague public transport good with luggage?

Prague has one of the best public transport networks in Europe – metro, trams and buses run frequently and tickets are cheap. With luggage, though, you have to think about:

  • stairs and escalators in metro stations,
  • crowded trams in the city centre,
  • limited space for large suitcases in buses and trams,
  • peak hours when locals commute to work.

Below you’ll find a realistic overview of each transport option – and when a direct luggage transfer to the airport saves time and nerves.

Public transport options with luggage – pros and cons

Mode Best for With luggage
Metro Fast cross-city travel Good with one suitcase and backpack. Watch for stairs, escalators and crowds at rush hour.
Trams Short distances in the centre Fine with smaller bags. Narrow aisles and sudden stops can be tricky with bigger suitcases.
City buses Areas without metro or trams Not ideal for multiple large bags. Limited standing space and more motion.
Airport bus 119 + metro Budget trip to/from airport Acceptable with 1–2 suitcases, but involves climbing on/off and changing to metro.
Airport Express bus Direct to Main Station Easier with luggage thanks to dedicated luggage space, but still only part of the journey.
Luggage transfer (Voyli.one) Hotel/Airbnb → airport No luggage in public transport at all. You travel light, only with hand luggage.

Check availability

Metro in Prague with luggage

Metro is usually the fastest way to cross Prague. For travellers with luggage:

  • Most stations have escalators, some have elevators – but not all.
  • Peak times (7–9 am, 4–6 pm) can be very crowded.
  • Stand back from the platform edge, especially with trolleys.
  • Keep one hand on your suitcase and one on the handrail in escalators.

If you’re coming from or going to the airport, you’ll typically change at Nádraží Veleslavín (line A). With multiple bags or kids, all the transfers can be exhausting.

Metro luggage tips

  • Use elevators if available – look for the wheelchair symbol.
  • Avoid full rush-hour trains when possible.
  • Keep backpacks on your front in very crowded cars.
  • Don’t block doors with suitcases – stand to the side.

Trams and buses with suitcases

Trams are iconic in Prague and often the most scenic way to move around. With luggage, they have some limitations:

  • Older trams have steps and narrow doors.
  • Newer low-floor trams are better, but space is still limited.
  • Sudden braking can send loose suitcases flying.
  • Trams can be very full near the centre during peak times.

City buses are similar – fine with one suitcase, annoying with three. Combine them carefully with where you stay and how many people you are.

When to avoid trams and buses with luggage

  • You have more than one large suitcase per person.
  • You travel with small kids or elderly relatives.
  • You’re going across the city during peak hours.
  • You’re already tired after a long flight or night train.

In these cases, combining public transport with luggage transfer can make your day much easier.

Getting to Prague Airport with luggage

There is no direct metro to the airport. Your main public transport options are:

Bus 119 + metro line A

The standard way: metro A (green line) to Nádraží Veleslavín, then bus 119 to the airport.

  • Cheapest solution with a regular ticket.
  • Involves stairs/escalators and one change with luggage.
  • Fine with a backpack or one medium suitcase.

Airport Express (AE bus)

Runs between Main Train Station and the airport, with space for luggage.

  • Good if you arrive or depart by train.
  • Still need to navigate station lifts/escalators.
  • Can be busy at peak times.

Luggage transfer + any transport

You move only yourself – by metro, tram, taxi or rideshare – and your bags go separately.

  • No lifting suitcases in and out of buses or trams.
  • You can choose the most comfortable route just for people.
  • Perfect for families or groups with many bags.
